Leading in aerospace medicine and aeromedical evacuations

From 19 to 26 May 2023, a team from EATC’s aeromedical coordination center (AECC) attended the “Aerospace Medical Association” (ASMA) annual meeting in New Orleans (US).

Lieutenant-Colonel Alessandro Fiorini, one of EATC’s distinguished flight surgeons, presented EATC’s cross-national strategic aeromedical evacuations, and in particular during the Covid-19 years and the war in Ukraine. He underlined that “We are a team of nine flight surgeons and nurses coordinating on average more than 1.100 aeromedical evacuation requests per year. During the pandemic, the numbers were at a peak. Besides the “business as usual”, we evacuated over 1.060 Covid-19 infected patients. Then, since February 2022, when the war in the Ukraine started, we have already evacuated more than 250 military and civilian patients, including 30 children.”

Together with his fellow flight surgeons, Lieutenant-Colonel Fiorini published a comprehensive research article on cross-national missions during these crisis. “I am very proud of our article and I am honoured that it was judged to represent the top 7% of the performances from a field of some 193 contestants in this year's ASMA competition. I would like to thank my co-authors and colleagues at AECC for this success. We wrote together this outstanding research report, just as we work together on a daily basis. Our article reflects perfectly what EATC and its aeromedical coordination center stand for : multinational cooperation, effective and reliable solutions, efficiency and excellency.”
