EATC Flight Surgeon Delivers Keynote at GSS26

From 18–20 March 2026, the Government Services Symposium 2026 (GSS26) in Norfolk, Virginia brought together leading military and emergency medicine professionals. Among the keynote speakers was Lieutenant-Colonel Dr Ralph Vermeltfoort, Chief Flight Surgeon at the Aeromedical Evacuation Control Centre (AECC) of the European Air Transport Command (EATC).

Opening Day 2 of the symposium, LtCol Vermeltfoort delivered a keynote on “Changing Views on Patient Transport in Large-Scale Conflicts”, a topic of growing importance in today’s security environment. His presentation highlighted the need to adapt aeromedical evacuation concepts to contested, high-intensity operational scenarios, emphasising flexibility, multinational coordination, and rapid response.

Drawing on his role at Eindhoven Air Base, he provided a unique operational perspective at the intersection of clinical care and mission planning. His insights underlined the increasing importance of integrating medical expertise into command-and-control structures to ensure effective patient transport under complex conditions.

As part of a broader programme addressing readiness, deployment medicine, and future conflict scenarios, his keynote contributed to the international exchange of knowledge and best practices among allied partners. It also highlighted the value of EATC’s multinational approach in delivering coordinated, high-quality aeromedical evacuation support.

LtCol Vermeltfoort’s participation at GSS26 underscores EATC’s continued commitment to innovation, interoperability, and leadership in multinational aeromedical evacuation, strengthening cooperation among allied forces and enhancing medical support for future operations.
