On 21 January 2025, Major General Franck Mollard, Commander of the European Air Transport Command (EATC), visited the Belgian Air Force’s 15th Wing to engage with personnel, assess operational processes, and discuss future advancements in air transport operations. The visit highlighted the pivotal role the 15th Wing plays within the EATC framework and served as a platform to address key developments, including officer training, operational tools, and innovative projects.
Streamlining Processes and Enhancing Training
During the visit, the EATC Commander emphasized the importance of standardized processes in optimizing multinational air transport operations. A key focus was on the rigorous training programs for Air Operations Officers, which combine theoretical learning with practical exercises to prepare personnel for managing complex missions. These efforts are instrumental in fostering interoperability and operational efficiency among EATC member nations.
Evolution of the Mission Builder
A significant point of discussion was the evolution of the EATC Mission Builder, an innovative tool developed by the 15th Wing to optimize planning and coordination of multinational air transport missions, and building on the latest AIRAC, Air Threat data and Aircrew feedback. The Commander received a detailed demonstration of the tool's functionalities, showcasing its ability to enhance user experience and enable precise mission planning and coordination. The continued development of the Mission Builder is not only pivotal for upgrading EATC's multi-user software, MEAT—short for "Management of European Air Transport"—but also for ensuring the success of its broader operations.
The Role of Reporting in Operational Success
The importance of accurate and timely reporting was another focal point during the visit. The Commander underlined that robust reporting mechanisms are essential for tracking mission outcomes, identifying areas for improvement, and ensuring accountability. High-quality reporting strengthens operational efficiency while reinforcing trust and transparency within the EATC community.
Celebrating ETAP and the Lighthouse Project
The 15th Wing also highlighted two successful initiatives under the EATC umbrella: the European Tactical Airlift Program (ETAP) and the Lighthouse Project. ETAP has become a benchmark for tactical airlift training, bringing together multinational crews to enhance interoperability and readiness. Meanwhile, the Lighthouse Project is a beacon of innovation, integrating new technologies and approaches to future-proof EATC operations.
Looking Ahead
The visit concluded with a shared commitment to advancing EATC’s mission of delivering efficient, reliable, and collaborative air transport solutions. The insights and commitments from this visit are expected to enhance the partnership between EATC and the 15th Wing, ensuring continued success in meeting the demands of modern air operations.
