NH 90 fits into A400M pictured by Airbus Military


The A400M has been designed to be a most reliable airlifter. By using proven Airbus commercial airliners equipment, tools and concepts, it benefits from the high reliability of the commercial airliners - and therewith from the knowledge to reduce life cycle costs: In twelve years of operation, the mandatory heavy maintenance down-time shall require the A400M to be on the ground for only 84 days in total (dated by Airbus Military). The European A400M PN are keen to see whether this commercial approach will fulfil the high expectations - but can rely on year-lasting experience with the testing aircraft.

Efficiency allows higher productivity
According to Airbus Military a fleet of eight A400Ms offers the same productivity (measured in tons per nm each year) as a fleet of eighteen tactical airlifters from the previous generation. Same time the life cycle cost of these previous carriers can be up to 55% higher than the eight A400M fleet’s costs. Moreover most tactical used carriers are so far unable to transport outsize loads such as bigger helicopters or more than one armoured vehicle at once.
This example shall imagine, that the A400M is one of the few aircraft world-wide to carry material for tactical, strategic and partially outsize needs. It shows also, that the aircraft can - the same time - be regarded as effective (in operational terms) as well as efficient (no additional costs for a further aircraft types to use).  
In view of its capabilities to cover wide distances, flying fast and high while carrying more and heavier loads, the new aircraft will -  in the long run - charge off the existing C-160 Transall by far. On a short term perspective the efficiency of the aircraft will result into
-    more sorties available per day
-    reducing troop fatigue
-    faster AirMedEvac in comparison to other propelled aircraft.
